Having settled in South India for many years, I , a north indian by birth, have found that I have become habitual to a very soft side of my taste buds. I relish light food, preferably south Indian and feel very calm at heart. Wherever I travel, I find myself under the most staring and almost accusing eyes of my near and dear ones-the reason? ...I wish to order idlis for my food and invite the wrath of my team as they suggest that I too become the member of what we all call today as fast-food-fraternity.
I don't intend to disagree and hurt my friends for being so food-funkies. But instead I want to discuss as to what is happening to us all today? What are we trying to prove when we say we are westernised! I still remember the day when we asked a rag-picker to put some nice clothes (which we had given her) and took her along to a restaurant where one of my friends had thrown a party. Till date nobody can believe that she was from that low-line which we generously call as poverty line. FOOD AND CLOTHING MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD!!!
During my visit to one of my favourite places in south India, I still remember that due to unavoidable circumstance I missed my dinner and before boarding the train,we decided to dine at a good traditional hotel. My embarrassment knew no bounds when we found not a single family restaurant opened. I was very hungry so my husband suggested a trial of fast food at pizza hut. I accepted as when hunger pangs overrule your senses, all your so-called intelligence goes back to the pavilion. We had ginger bread with cheese and believe me After taking that stuff which costed a Rs.150,I was as hungry as before. My mouth was watering with hunger as well as thinking about a good satiating food. Finally I calmed my pangs with fruits.
That day, I realised how important food is when you dont get it as per your requirement. I also wonder how our youngies have learnt to get glued to the westernised food like labels on products. Down the nostalgic lane , I remember my american friend who, once looking at a fast-food joint, confirmed with great conviction," INDIA IS FINISHED'!
